How does an eSIM work?

Quick answer

An eSIM works by downloading a carrier profile onto a chip already in your phone. The carrier sends you a QR code; you scan it from Settings; your phone fetches the profile over Wi-Fi (about 30 seconds); you pick it as your data line; you''re online. No physical swap, no kiosk.

Context

Under the hood, an eSIM (embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card, eUICC) is a re-programmable chip soldered into your phone''s motherboard. It can hold multiple carrier ''profiles'' at once — think of profiles as software SIM cards that the phone can swap between in Settings.

When you buy a plan, the carrier generates a profile in their system and gives you a QR code or activation code. Your phone reads the code, contacts the carrier''s provisioning server over Wi-Fi, downloads the profile (encrypted), and installs it onto the eSIM chip. From the phone''s perspective, the eSIM is now a real SIM — it can register on local networks just like a plastic card would.

Step by step

  1. Buy a plan online. You''ll get a QR code (or a manual activation code) by email within seconds.
  2. Open Settings on your phone — on iPhone tap ''Cellular'' then ''Add Cellular Plan''; on Android tap ''Network & internet'' → ''SIMs'' → ''Add eSIM''.
  3. Point the camera at the QR code, or paste the activation code. Wait 30–60 seconds while the profile downloads over Wi-Fi.
  4. Label the new line (''Travel'' is fine). Pick whether it''s your primary or secondary line, and set it as your data line.
  5. Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM (it''s required even though you''re not technically roaming — local carriers see it as a foreign SIM). You''re online.

When this matters

Before takeoff

Install the eSIM on Wi-Fi at home and toggle it off until you land. The moment your plane touches down, switch it on and you''re already connected.

Multiple countries on one trip

Hold a Europe regional eSIM and a Japan-only eSIM at the same time. Switch the active line in Settings as you cross borders — no physical swap.

Work + personal

Keep your work SIM active for calls and 2FA; route data through a cheap local eSIM. You only pay roaming for the few texts your work line receives.

Related questions

How long does eSIM activation take?

Two to five minutes start to finish. The QR scan and profile download takes about 30–60 seconds; the rest is naming the line and toggling Data Roaming on.

Do I need Wi-Fi to install an eSIM?

Yes for the initial download — the profile is fetched over the internet. After it''s installed it runs on cellular like any SIM. Install before you fly, or use airport Wi-Fi.

Why do I have to turn on Data Roaming?

Local carriers see your foreign-bought eSIM as a roaming SIM (technically it is — it''s a profile from one provider running on another country''s network). The roaming switch unlocks the connection; you''re not charged extra because the plan is prepaid.

Can I install the same eSIM on two phones?

No. The profile binds to the first phone that activates it. Buy a separate plan for each device.

What if I lose Wi-Fi during install?

The install will pause and resume when Wi-Fi is back. The QR code stays valid — you can re-scan it. If you''re fully out of coverage, contact support and we''ll re-issue.

Will my regular calls and texts still work?

Yes. Your physical SIM (or primary eSIM) stays active. Only mobile data routes through the new eSIM.
