The complete eSIM buying guide

Everything you need to pick the right eSIM, install it in two minutes, and avoid roaming charges anywhere in the world.

1. What an eSIM is (and isn't)

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile — no physical card. Your phone already has the chip; the carrier sends you a profile to install via QR code. Once installed, your phone treats it like any other line: it connects to local towers, gets a local IP, and routes data through the carrier you chose.

eSIMs are not "magic free roaming." They're a faster, cheaper alternative to (a) swapping a physical SIM, (b) paying your home carrier $12/day, or (c) hunting for a phone-store SIM after landing.

2. Does your phone support eSIM?

iPhone

XS and newer. iPhone 14+ sold in the US is eSIM-only.

Pixel

Pixel 3 and newer.

Samsung

Galaxy S20+, Z Flip/Fold series, A54+.

Quickest check: open Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan (iOS) or Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Download a SIM instead (Android). If the option exists, you're supported.

3. How much data do you actually need?

  • 1 GB / week — maps, messaging, occasional browsing. Fine for short city trips.
  • 3–5 GB / week — social media, photo uploads, light video. Most travelers fit here.
  • 10+ GB / week — streaming, video calls, hotspot for laptop. Buy unlimited or top up.

Most ConnectSIM trips end with 30–40% data unused. When in doubt, start at 3 GB; you can always add more.

4. Pick a country, region, or global plan

  • Country plans — cheapest per GB when you're in one place (e.g. Japan).
  • Regional plans — one eSIM across many countries (Europe, Latin America, Asia).
  • Global plans — multi-continent itineraries; slightly higher per-GB but zero hassle.

5. How to install your eSIM

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM (Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan).
  2. Pick a plan for your destination — country, region, or global.
  3. Buy and receive the QR code by email instantly.
  4. Before takeoff, on Wi-Fi: scan the QR code in your phone's Cellular settings.
  5. Label the new line (e.g. 'Travel') and set it as your data line.
  6. Turn OFF cellular data and data roaming on your home line.
  7. Land, toggle airplane mode briefly — you're connected.

6. eSIM vs your US carrier's roaming

Verizon TravelPass is $12/day per device, throttled after 500 MB. T-Mobile includes free international data but at 2G speeds (~256 kbps). For more than 2 days abroad, an eSIM beats both on speed AND cost — usually by 70%+.

7. Common mistakes (and how to dodge them)

Forgetting to turn off cellular data on your home line — Verizon will silently charge TravelPass the moment you land.
Installing the eSIM after landing without Wi-Fi — most QR scans need internet. Install at home or in the airport lounge.
Buying too much data 'just in case' — most travelers use 30% less than they buy.
Skipping the data-roaming toggle on the new eSIM line — it must be ON for the eSIM to use a local network (it's not really roaming for that line).

8. FAQ

What is an eSIM?
An embedded SIM — a digital SIM profile stored on a chip already inside your phone. No physical card to swap. You download a carrier's profile via QR code or activation link.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Yes if you have an iPhone XS or newer (US iPhone 14+ is eSIM-only), Google Pixel 3 or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer, or most flagship Android phones from 2020 onward. Check Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan.
Will using an eSIM abroad cost extra on my home plan?
No — the travel eSIM is a separate data line on a local carrier. As long as you turn OFF cellular data on your home line, your home carrier never bills roaming.
How much data do I need?
Light use (maps, messaging): 1 GB per week. Moderate (social, occasional video): 3–5 GB per week. Heavy (streaming, hotspot): 10+ GB per week.
Can I keep my regular phone number?
Yes. Keep your home line as the primary voice/SMS line; the eSIM only carries data. Calls and texts to your number continue to work over Wi-Fi Calling or the secondary line.
What if the eSIM stops working mid-trip?
Switch to airplane mode for 10 seconds and back, or manually select a different network in Settings → Carrier. If still failing, our support team can re-issue the activation profile within minutes.
